Full Text

February 17.

There is a report in circulation, that Mr. Pinckney, our minister to France, has been received by the Directory. Dispatches are said to have been received by our Executive announcing the event.

By what arrival they have come to hand we have not heard. We sincerely hope the report well founded, and that an accommodation of our differences with France may be speedily accomplished.

We have time and again stated our doubts and fears about the reception of Mr. Pinckney and the ground of them; but shall be happy to be able early to give a confirmation of the report which dispels them. If our minister has been in fact received, it was probably done on this ground—that though he could not bring special instructions on the subject of the late breach between the two nations, fresh instructions or powers could not fail soon to be received by him.

The source of the dispatches is unknown. The report is hoped to be true, leading to accommodation of differences with France. Previous doubts about Pinckney's reception are noted, but confirmation would dispel them.
