Three Shifts to Be Maintained Working 24 Hours, Mayor Says
Late this afternoon three different removal crews were working on the Lower Franklin Street terminus of the slide. Two shovel crews were loading trucks from both sides of the slide, and the third crew was sluicing the mud and debris from the face of the slide into the sluice box, constructed last night along the driveway of the Juneau Cold Storage, emptying into the bay.
In addition scattered crews were removing debris and excavating in various sections of the slide, including the site of the Matson Boarding House where it is believed victims may be entombed. Stumps and portions of buildings were being pulled out with a cable rig powered by a caterpillar. Members of the Juneau Fire Department were clearing away surface debris and playing streams of water into openings they had made, trying to put out fires that apparently had burned all night and continued to do so, many feet under the cover of muck and mud.
Mayor Goldstein said this afternoon the city would maintain a 24-hour workday with three shifts of workmen in an effort to tear away the debris and take out any one who might still be in the wreckage.
SITKA MAN BELIEVED BURIED IN AVALANCHE
Oscar Leiti of Sitka, who had a room at the Matson Boarding House, and who is believed buried in the avalanche, had come to Juneau for medical treatment several days ago. Efforts to locate him around town up to this afternoon had been futile.
