Full Text

A MISTAKE.—The Charleston Mercury says that General D. H. Hill is a South Carolinian, and that it was his regiment that won the battle of Bethel. It is true that General Hill was born and reared in South Carolina, but it is not the less true that prior to the war he had lived some years in this State, and that he won the battle of Bethel with the First North Carolina Regiment, aided by the Richmond Howitzers. As the Mercury is disposed to claim all the credit for its State, we remind it that North Carolinians drew the first blood from the enemy.
