The trial of Martin is closed. He is capitally convicted, and will be sentenced to death. He was indicted for assaulting and robbing Major Bray, being armed with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill or maim. The Court informed the Jury that if they doubted as to the intention to kill, they might give a verdict of guilty of Robbery only, which is not capital. The jury have this moment returned a verdict of Guilty of the whole indictment. It was proved on the trial that he presented a pistol, and demanded Major B's money or his life. A pistol was found, nine days after he left the jail in Springfield where he was first arrested, concealed in a straw bed, on which he lodged, which was produced in Court, and found, on drawing the charge, to be loaded with duck shot. Major Bray's watch was found on him and the Major fully identified him as the robber. The defence was able and ingenious. Martin exhibited very little concern during the trial, or at the return of the verdict. He is a foreigner.
