Compliment to Ohio,

The selection of Senator Corwin for so important and responsible a post as that of the Secretary of the Treasury, is a compliment to the man and the State, for which we may well be proud. No man in the west, perhaps in the Union, has been the object of more virulent abuse and bitter endless hatred than Thomas Corwin. His great speech on the Mexican war, which thrilled through the National heart, and appealed so powerfully to the national conscience, has been the special mark of attack for low demagogues and fawning sycophants. The enemies of Mr. Corwin have insisted that his abilities were all showy and superficial, and that close application, and laborious research were not among his qualities. While even his bitterest foes admit his power and eloquence as an orator, they have not given him credit for any thing else.

The judgment and sagacity of the President have led him to a different conclusion.— With the best opportunities for knowing Mr. Corwin's fitness for so responsible a post, with a direct personal intercourse with him for eight months, where his position as Speaker of the Senate has given him a chance to know the whole truth about the ability and habits of those on the floor of the Senate, Mr. Fillmore has expressed his conviction of duty by this appointment. Every person is aware that the Treasury department is one of the most laborious and perplexing in the cabinet. We rejoice that the opponents of Mr. Corwin will now have a chance to find out his true character and strength. We feel confident he will be equal to the crisis. We know his appointment will be popular here, and will give a tone to the administration that will secure the good will and zealous support of the people of Ohio. [O. S. Journal.
