Full Text
Prying loose federal dollars for civilian defense needs in Alaska is going to be no easy matter. Indications are little is being planned in areas under 100,000 population and concentration of civilian defense effort will be directed to large centers of population, particularly those where the big war production plants are located. The recent legislature, as did those of most of the states, enacted a Civilian Defense law which provides among other things that $250,000 can be expended for civilian defense purposes, if and when it is matched dollar for dollar or better by the Federal government. Due to Alaska's large, sprawling area, sparse population and no war production plants its prospects of sharing in federal money for civilian defense are not particularly bright.
