Wallace Bus Crash Gives 5 Arguments

(Continued from Page One.)

school buses; (4) opponents of diversion of highway funds; and (5) those who feel that the present school buses aren't in such bad shape.

Taking these up seriatim and by categories:

1. The driver of the truck which collided with the bus did not have a driver's license, according to news reports. From this premise, those who want a bigger patrol point out that it is a case which clearly demonstrates the need for stricter supervision of highways and motor vehicle operators. With more patrolmen, chances for license-less drivers are fewer, they contend.

2. The accident was caused by one of the bigger trucks, contend those who dislike intensely this type of traffic. If the trucks had been forced to pay more for using the road, it would have been possible to widen the 18-foot bridge on which the accident occurred, they assert.

3. The hero of the occasion was the student driver who was largely responsible for there being no deaths. Certainly no adult driver could have done more or better, and the incident proves the wisdom of the School Commission's policy of employing student drivers, it is argued.

4. The accident was primarily caused by a narrow bridge. Stop diverting highway funds and it will be possible to widen the several thousand such bridges in North Carolina, shout the anti-diversionists.

5. The bus was a Chevrolet, 1934 model, one of the older buses in use by schools throughout the State. Its construction and excellent condition in which it had been maintained helped prevent death or really serious injury to any of the 50-odd children riding in it.
