Frederick William III, by the Grace of God, King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Arch-Chamberlain, Prince Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, &c.
To the French Republic, and in his name, to the Citizens who compose the Executive Directory.
BERLIN, 17th Nov. 1797.
Great and dear Friends,
Providence having disposed of the days of the King, my father, who died on the 16th of this month, and having called me to the throne of my ancestors, I am anxious to announce to you this double event, persuaded that you will take a part in the loss which I have experienced, and that you are interested in my accession to the government of the Prussian Kingdom.
I shall take the utmost care to cultivate and cement the good understanding which has so happily been established between the two nations ; and under which, I pray God to keep you, great and dear friends, in his most holy protection.
Your good friend,
(Signed)
FREDERICK WILLIAM.
