[From the Declaration of Independence.]
"We hold these truths to be self-evident—that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
COMMENT.
[From the National Intelligencer, Aug. 1.]
Was committed to the jail of Washington County, District of Columbia, on the 22d July last, as a runaway, a NEGRO MAN by the name of GILBERT HORTON. He is five feet four inches high, stout made, large full eyes, and a scar on his left arm near the elbow. Had on when committed, a tarpaulin hat, linen shirt, blue cloth jacket and trowsers—says that he was born free, in the State of New-York, near Peekskill. The owner or owners of the above described negro man, if any, are requested to come and prove him, and take him away, or he will be sold, for his jail fees and other expenses, as the law directs.

And for what?—for his height, make, yes, or for the scar on his arm;—for his tarpaulin hat, linen shirt, or blue cloth jacket and trowsers?—No. It is because he says he is born free, was "endowed by his Creator with certain unalienable rights," and was found at liberty at the seat of government of these free and independent States—taken up, imprisoned, and sold by the Marshal of the District of Columbia! Alas! for the colour of the skin, and the difference of a few degrees of latitude, by which a man born free is attainted, cast into prison, and sold as a slave. How is it in Russia and Turkey? Are men made slaves upon suspicion?—Or would the existence of such a state of things, in any other country, rouse our republican energies to attempt another crusade for the relief of "oppressed humanity?"
