ON SALT-RIVER BANKS

On Salt River's gloomy waters, where the bullfrog and his daughters
jar the welkin till it totters,
many barks are sailing now;
many spectral boats are sailing
to the sound of bitter railing,
there's an overtone of wailing,
from the keelson to the prow.
At the polls some were rejected:
t'other fellows were elected,
for the voters, much respected,
while the campaign dragged along,
voted as their hearts dictated,
and candidates are slated
voyage sorrow-weighted
in tears voted wrong the voters, fateful sowers
While of statesmen they choose there's
there must be of losers
on Salt River ing tram;
by the voter and token
hopeful hearts still be broken
that will rhyme with jam.
Cheer cheer up, ye who travel
Salt River's ebon gravel,
till a healer and his salve'll
relieve pristine health restore:
with the ghostly breezes fannin'
your bark in gladsome manner
wave the good old standard banner,
and declare you are not sore.
When a candidate defeated
whines that he was cheated
by the voters greeted
with a look of scorn:
but the loser makes howling
if they find him gayly singing
ragtime music while trilling
to his old tune again.
