Full Text

The taking of Breda, by Dumourier, is thought a very surprising victory: for although it is a small town, it is most wonderfully fortified, and is surrounded by three broad and deep ditches, one inside the other, and the least of them as wide as one of our wharves in Philadelphia. The great French engineer, Vauban, could not take Breda in less than ten months, and even then it was reduced by famine to surrender: How different has been the success of Dumourier, who took it after a cannonade of a few hours! His army, however, was very strong, and the besieged were, many of them, more his friends than his enemies.
