WASHINGTON, (A)—The Civil Service Commission announced yesterday that about 10,000 civilian federal positions in Alaska were put under the competitive Civil Service System this week.
Most of the jobs are in the Depts. of Defense, Interior, Commerce, Agriculture & Post Office.
Incumbent employes who are recommended to the commission by their agency and who can meet the qualifications will be given their proper status under the career-conditional appointment system which went into effect last January.
Employes who previously had earned competitive status in other federal employment may become career employes in their positions solely by action of the employing agency.
Those employes who are not given career status through either of those methods will become "status quo" employes. They will retain their positions and grades but will not have full job retention rights of career or career-conditional employes in the event of reductions in force.
Future job vacancies will be filled under the competitive system. A Civil Service Commission branch office has already been set up in Anchorage, the commission said. It added that boards of Civil Service examiners have been created in Juneau, at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, and in Anchorage.
The commission said the action in Alaska was a major step in putting into effect plans announced months ago for extending competitive Civil Service to about 35,000 federal civilian positions in Alaska, Guam, and foreign countries.
