Extract of a letter from Irvine, Sept. 5.

The Earl of Bute, transport, arrived here from New York, but last from Staten Island, has brought in with her an American schooner, laden with rice, indigo, &c. from Carolina to Nantz, which they took after an engagement of three glasses, without having a single man killed or wounded. The schooner mounted eight guns, and mainly aimed a running fight, thinking to reach the coast of France, from which she was distant but three leagues when she was taken; a broadside of grape, which cut the rigging much, and wounded several hands, made her strike; her cargo is valued at 5000 l. the vessel at 300 l.
