NEW YORK-New York is to have a new exchange. A charter has been received from the state authorizing the opening of a cocoa exchange, which is expected to be ready early in September, and will be situated at 124-26 Water St.
The organization committee includes: A. P. Arosteguy of J. J. Julia & Co.; Frank J. Barrett, Frank J. Barrett & Co.: Maurice C. Hill, Willard Hawes & Co.; Benjamin Peabody, T. Barbour Brown & Co.; Isaac Witkin, J. Aron & Co.
The permanent secretary is Robert Cross. formerly with W. R. Grace & Co.
It is regarded as highly likely that as the exchange gets under way and has proven itself a success that other products of the tropics may be incorporated in it.
Burlap, spices and rubber are regarded as possibilities and the charter of the exchange has been so constructed that it will permit of amalgamation with kindred trades at some future time.
Permanent, officers of the exchange will be announced soon.
Elections are to be held annually.
Cocoa is no longer regarded as a luxury, according to those in the trade.
