Ice Cream and Strawberry Festival.
The fete given at Mr. Kennedy's residence on Thursday night for the benefit of the Presbyterian Church was more than a success: its attractions went so far beyond what was announced that it was a happy surprise to every one. The pleasure grounds attached to this residence are immensely improved by the removal of the fence between them and those of his son-in-law Mr. Ben. Owen, leaving quite an imposing extent of shady lawn and flower garden. This pleasant domain was illuminated partly by the light of a moon, nearly at the full, and partly by the soft radiance of Chinese lamps. Through these fairy-like vistas, happy couples roamed and happy groups were seated, at first listening to a well selected concert of vocal and instrumental music, and afterwards to the melody, sweeter to many, of loving converse. As inclination might direct, the visitors resorted time and again to the interior of the house, where refreshments light and delicate were furnished at pleasure; for the merits of these we had to rely upon hearsay as we are afflicted with a dyspeptic organization, which refuses to bear up under such entertainment at night, but testimony in approbation was unanimous. We made an early retreat from temptation, leaving a joyous crowd which showed no symptoms of breaking up for a long time. Every one derived much pleasure and we trust that the church derived substantial aid.
