What is this article about?
A newspaper commentary debunks a rumor from a French paper, via New York and Charleston, claiming the English were defeated in Egypt with 10,000 killed and Bordeaux illuminated for eight nights. It attributes the tale to exaggerated reports from Capt. Fernald in Vigo, Spain, about April events celebrated in June, highlighting the distance from Paris.

Another Canterbury Story about Egypt, has appeared in the Aurora, copied from a New-York French paper. The story is about an arrival at New-York from Charleston, bringing tidings of an arrival there of a vessel from Bordeaux, in a short passage, announcing the complete defeat of the English in Egypt, who had lost 10,000 killed in one battle; and that Bordeaux was illuminated EIGHT nights on the glorious event. No dates accompany this tale; but dates are of little consequence. The Jacobin caterers, it is well known, are careless what trash they serve up to their hungry guests: They judge that anything will go down, and therefore feast them on any offal that presents. These caterers, like French cooks, can make soup of anything; and this story is probably made up from an account brought by Capt. Fernald, arrived at Charleston, from Vigo, in Spain; who reports that on the 10th June there were great rejoicings at Vigo occasioned by the receipt of intelligence, that some time in April the English were completely defeated in Egypt; and that Paris had been illuminated on the event. Vigo is more than 800 miles from Paris. To any one the least acquainted with the cries of European information the exposition, of the folly of the above is unnecessary.
