The Rev. G. P. Riley, the Wesleyan Methodist, of Indiana, who was bounced from the Wesleyan conference recently in session here, for his refusal to renounce his membership in the G. A. R., addressed the veterans of the city last evening at the Division-st. M. E. Church. He advised the silver haired veterans to lean upon the doctrine of the Bible for their support in their declining years and likened a good man to a good tree that bears fruit and that continually absorbs nutriment from its surroundings congenial to its growth, and the bad man was considered as chaff that will be blown away and eternally lost. He said the "a" of the Christian religion was "to be born again." He said also that he had always been an enthusiast in every cause while he has espoused and he delighted to arm the ire of slave holders during the slavery agitation. While preaching to them he was often assaulted with an old installment of eggs and brickbats, but he continued to express his strong sentiments notwithstanding. He referred pathetically to the scene of his parting with his wife and seven children when he volunteered his services to aid in preserving the union He, while the tears were trickling down his furrowed cheek, told how he regretfully tore himself from the affectionate embrace of his loved ones on the morning of his departure and of the farewell grasp given him as he.
