Full Text

New Mexico Free.—It will be recollected that under the Buchanan administration a stringent law was passed by the Territorial Legislature of New Mexico "for the protection of Slave property." Some of its provisions were of the most revolting character, the penalties being death.

The recent message of Governor Connelly, the new Territorial Executive, recommended the repeal of the law, and the Legislature acted promptly on his suggestion, and almost unanimously.—A bill for the repeal of the slave law was immediately passed by both branches, and by the vote of every member of the Legislature, except one! New Mexico is Free.
