To A Fallen Angel

By Cyril Creque

So YOU are Music!

Popular today through your bewitching use of rouge and lipstick,

Your open sporting of jungle briefs as proper clothing.

Your binding of my home town with free-love frivolities.

Any Sunday or week-day or night

The bulging dance hall grips you,

Tosses you to and fro in the jam.

From the scantily-clad mambo to the stark-naked calypso

Like a helpless leaf in contrary winds.

No wonder, my dearly beloved,

I see

But can hardly recognize you any longer

Except now and then when you grow tired of the marathon,

Become a bit serious and thoughtful,

Break away from indecent devotions of your idolaters,

Retire from their noisy pleasure places.

Take a cleansing bath and come back to me transformed,

Wearing the celestial finery which immortal composers of then and now,

In loving gratitude, gave to you.
