U. S. Congress.

Monday, April 11, 1842.

SENATE.

Mr. Evans presented resolutions of the Legislature of Maine, calling the attention of Congress to the unjust regulations of the British Government in relation to its trade with foreign nations, and inveighing against conferring on the British Government any privileges not reciprocated, as an infringement on the rights of our citizens not to be tolerated.

The Loan Bill was again called up, and Mr. Evans moved to strike out the section relative to the sale of the stock and insert a section (the same in substance) authorizing the sale of the stock at par, and if par cannot be obtained, at the highest price at which proposals are made after advertisement, and the employment of, by the Secretary of the Treasury, agents to negotiate the loan.

After several amendments had been offered and rejected, the bill was ordered engrossed.

The Chair laid before the Senate the letter of resignation—to take effect from this day—of Hon. Samuel Prentiss of Vermont.

The Senate then adjourned.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

The Appropriation Bill was again taken up in Committee of the Whole, Mr. Proffit's amendment to strike out the item of $12,357 for repairs, &c., of Light Houses, pending.

Mr. Proffit's amendment was debated, and afterwards withdrawn.

After some further debate, the House adjourned.
