PERSECUTION IN FRANCE

The prevention of public worship by the Protestants in France was brought before the Chamber of Peers on the 11th ult. by petition from a Protestant consistory. It was proposed that the petition be referred to the minister of public worship. The proposition was ably supported by the Duc de Broglie and other friends of religious freedom, but it was pointedly opposed by M. Martin, and others, who contended that the people had no right to perform worship without the consent of the government acting through the mayor of the district. The Chamber passed to the order of the day, and the liberty for which Conde and Coligny fought and died, is for the present at an end.-British Chronicle.
