Clark College's commencement events get underway this evening at 8 when the Ida H. Goode department of home economics presents its annual candlelight service in Davage Auditorium. More than 40 women candlebearers will participate in the service, under the direction of Mrs. Flora G. Davis, department chairman. The service is dedicated to graduating seniors.
The address will be delivered by the Rev. Edward J. Odom, Jr., dean of Turner Theological Seminary, Morris Brown College.
Well-known to Atlanta audiences, Dean Odom is a Bachelor of Arts of Morris Brown College, received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale University, and earned the master's degree from Columbia University, New York.
He was formerly dean of students and college pastor at Wilberforce University, Ohio, where he also served as instructor in New Testament at Payne Theological Seminary. He was one of the first Negro chaplains commissioned in the U.S. Navy, and before his elevation to the deanship at Turner, he served as dean of students and college pastor at Morris Brown.
Dr. Odom is editor of "The Herald," official journal of the Georgia Teachers' and Education Association. He will be introduced by Miss Fannie Neely, instructor of foods and assistant dietitian.
Music for the occasion will be furnished by the college's music department, and the traditional planting of ivy—symbol of strength, courage and endurance, will conclude the service.
OTHER EVENTS
Other events scheduled during commencement week include a meeting of the board of directors, National Alumni Association; the annual Alumni Business Meeting and Alumni dinner, and reunion of the classes of '96, '06, '16, '26, '36, and '46, Saturday, June 2.
Senior class day exercises will be held Monday, June 4 at 11 a.m. and in the evening at 8 p.m., President and Mrs. James P. Brawley will entertain at a reception to the graduates, alumni and friends.
The Rev. Merrill Johnson, pastor, Trinity Methodist Church, Newburgh, N.Y., will preach the baccalaureate sermon Sunday, June 3 at 5:30 p.m.; and the commencement address will be delivered by Dr. Robert B. Pierce, pastor, Broadway Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Ind., Tuesday morning, June 5 at 10:30.
