Full Text
The parties in Congress are as distinctly divided on this question as on that of extending protection to Domestic Manufacturers. The Senate adopted an amendment to the Internal Improvement Bill by 23 to 22, restricting surveys for that purpose to those already commenced, thus intending to put an end to all future appropriations for that object. Parris, Foote and Sanford, were the only supposed administration members who voted for this provision, and their political views are of late extremely doubtful. The House refused to concur with this amendment by a vote of 70 for to 98 against. Of the Jackson members 59 voted in favour of putting a check on the progress of Internal Improvement, and but 29 against it. Of the administration party but eleven [Brown and Healy, N. Hampshire, Buck, Hunt, and Swift, Vermont, Chase, Rensselaer, and S. Wood New York, Culpepper, and Long, North Carolina, and McIntire, Maine] voted for the restriction and sixty nine against it! Can there be any possible pretence for doubt, after the repeated evidences of the above description furnished by votes in Congress, that the Jackson party are opposed to manufactures and Internal Improvements.
