MANILA, Philippine Islands - The deep rumble and the lofty mass of the heavy semi-trucks driven by the 180 men of the 3693rd Quartermaster Truck Company make them the rulers of the highways and streets in Manila.
This heavy truck company, located near the Quezon Institute, is a relatively independent organization. All guard mount and kitchen details are handled by the men in the company.
Each of the three platoons of the company has around forty truck drivers. These drivers can expect to be driving once every three days; however, the number of drivers in use depends on the hauling commitment of the PHIBCOM Transportation Service. Most drivers on duty drive their 2½ to 10-ton Autocar trucks twelve hours a day.
KEPT BUSY
An all-Negro unit, the company keeps its 80 trailers and 60 tractors (the driving unit which pulls the trailer) busy hauling the Army's heavy freight everything from bales of GI clothing to prefabricated buildings.
The organization's work is chiefly devoted to transporting materials from Manila harbor to various supply depots, but it has several other important tasks, too.
One of the various odd jobs that the company does is to carry mail between Manila and scattered Army units, such as those around Angeles. This Quartermaster truck company has also transported UNRRA food supplies to ships in Manila harbor waiting to deliver their precious cargoes to starving millions. Troops moving from Replacement Depots to the troop loading area have also been carried towns as San Fernando and Baliuag.
