Mr. Nat Wetzel, president and general manager of the Western Poultry & Game Co., of St. Louis, was in the city this week making final settlement with the various melon growers' associations. The bills of the associations have been paid to the cent and there is not the least particle of dissatisfaction existing with any one in regard to Mr. Wetzel's manner of doing business. He has fulfilled his contract to the letter in every case. Following is a list of the associations and the amount of their balances against the Western Poultry & Game Co. Fairmount, $74.88; Fowler, $1,346.59; Grand Valley, $249.00; Holly, $546.02; La Junta, $752.68; Lamar, $360.68; Las Animas, $991.31; Manzanola, $555.14; Newdale, $229.56 and Rocky Ford, $2,169.54, total $7,275.36.
The total amount paid the growers of the valley during the season was $114,316.94.—Rocky Ford Republican.
Mr. Wetzel's settlements may be satisfactory to some people but he will have to invent an entirely new form of contract to inveigle the farmers in this part of the valley into planting cantaloupes to sell to him another season. He failed to do anything near as well for his producers as the independent buyers did for theirs.
