KINGSTON, MARCH 8.
The Acasta frigate of 40 guns, captain Dann, which sailed on Monday se'nnight, with Vice-Admiral Duckworth, for the station off Cadiz, came to an anchor off the Palisades, opposite to this city on Saturday evening, with dispatches from Sir John to Vice Admiral Dacres, requiring such ships of the squadron as were fit for sea to join him immediately, as he had spoken the Veteran, of 64 guns, which he had fallen in with proceeding for Port Royal, with intelligence that six were lightly wounded, and three men and a Sandwich Islander, were all that went clear.— The four sharps were not wounded, and two or three were but slightly, rushed through the crowd of Indians, got below and found a few muskets loaded, fired them through the loop holes in the break of the Forecastle, which terrified the Natives and many jumped overboard, when the people came on deck. and after fighting a few Indians that seemed determined to hold their prize, killed and drove all overboard. One canoe was seen under the bows, endeavoring to cut the cable; a swivel was taken from the after part of the ship forward, discharged at them, six were killed by the swivel, and one afterwards by a musket, so that one was left alive in the canoe. The crew lost their jack knives, by stabbing the Indians through their skulls and were unable to draw them out. After the decks were cleared the topsails were loosed; when the ship swung her head off shore, the cable was cut, and after some beating, was able to get out of the Sound. Two days after were off Nevis, the wind coming ahead, shaped a course towards the Northward. June 17. deposited the bodies of our deceased ship-mates in the deep.
