WASHINGTON CITY.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8.

A short time since one of the factious editors of Boston, asserted that he was prepared to prove the proffered mediation of Russia to be the unauthorized act of the Russian Minister. This was unequivocally denied, and called for the proofs Instead of producing them the Boston editor evades our demand and backs out of the dilemma into which his effrontery had placed him, by answering "we shall let the matter rest here till we see a proper moment to bring the facts before the public." This was no more than we expected, being well convinced there was not a shadow of truth in the allegation. But no sooner does detection drive these champions of faction from one slander than they fly to another with all the facility of experienced vice. In the very paper which contains what may be taken as a relinquishment of the former charge the same editor has the hardihood to make the following assertion:

"We aver that Mr. Daschkoff made his first verbal overture to Mr. Madison on the 28th of January, which Mr. Madison then declined."

Now without wasting words upon one who must be as incapable of shame as he is of candor, it will be sufficient to say that this charge is merely a repetition of what was stated on the floor of Congress, by a federal member during the last session, and which was soon afterwards repelled by Mr. Eppes, in the most positive manner. Mr. Eppes contradiction has not been questioned from any respectable quarter; and, we will merely add that the assertion as reiterated by the Boston Editor is utterly and entirely false.

Event Details

A Washington newspaper denies a Boston editor's claim that he could prove Russia's mediation offer unauthorized, noting the editor evaded providing proofs. The editor then asserted Mr. Daschkoff made a verbal overture to Mr. Madison on January 28, which was declined; this is called a false repetition of a congressional statement repelled by Mr. Eppes.
