HALIFAX, March 25.

To counteract the reports which have been industriously spread in this state, of 20 or 30 millions of dollars having been awarded to British creditors, under the 6th article of the British treaty, we are happy in having it in our power to lay before our readers the following letter from one of the American Commissioners:

DEAR SIR,

I am sorry to see by Governor Davie's letter to you, that so much alarm has been created in your country, on the subject of British claims; but it is only a part of a system long pursued by the enemies of the government to render it unpopular.—In the present case, the report is entirely unfounded, as not one award has yet been made in favor of any British creditor. The claims made are certainly large, but they will undergo a thorough investigation; and my hope is, that none will be allowed but such as are justly due, and these I trust no American would wish to set aside.

The time which has elapsed since the treaty of peace, renders it necessary for the United States to make strict inquiry, in every state wherein legal impediments existed—it would be an essential service, to the public, if gentlemen would give information to their agents on points that affect their interests.

With great respect I am,

Sir, your most humble servant,

THOMAS FITZSIMONS.
