Full Text

Dr. Brisbane and His Church—We learn from the Philanthropist, that this excellent minister and his church have come in conflict with each other, upon the slavery question. And that in consequence of some strong opposition manifested in a church meeting, to his uncompromising hatred of slavery, and rather a direct attack upon himself, he has resigned his pastorship over them.—The church have called a meeting, made some compromise, and refused to accept his resignation; in view of which the doctor, the following Sabbath, preached a sermon strong in defence of abolition principles, & urging them to open the meeting house they were now building for anti-slavery meetings, (which was the point at issue between them,) or he could not and should not serve them as a pastor. Thus those pro-slavery Baptists have failed to make their minister bow to the dark spirit of slavery. This is a minister of the right stamp. It were useless to say success to him, he will have it.—Colored American.
