Full Text

A very extraordinary character has lately made his appearance at Trieste, whose conduct has given rise to doubts, whether he does not possess the dangerous secret of Alchemy, which brought St. Leon into such distresses, and against which Mr. Godwin has given himself so much trouble to admonish us. The name by which this stranger, whose origin is unknown, but who gives out that he is an Egyptian, chooses to pass, is that of Count Cais Pharaoh. His equipages exceed in splendor every thing that has been seen in that quarter. His entertainments are imperial. At his own expense he has built a magnificent Opera-House in Trieste, which was opened for the first time on the 13th of May last—Upwards of 6000 spectators crowded to see this gratuitous exhibition, which was, however, so lucrative to those whom the wealthy stranger honored with his friendship, that the right of admission to a box was sold for 550 Florins.
