VOLUNTEERS!
On the first news of the murderous outrage on our national Ship the Chesapeake reaching this place, WILLIAM I. LEWIS, Esq. of Mount Athos, resolved to come forth at the great call of nature, of honor and his country. He then determined to raise one regiment at least, of Volunteer Infantry, of such officers and privates as would be most likely in the day of battle, to gain glory for themselves and satisfaction and security for their insulted country-- No sooner had this pious resolution been formed, than this gentleman was seized with a dangerous disease which brought him to the very verge of the grave--He is now a convalescent--and acquires strength hourly by the hope that he shall ere long aid in hurling merited vengeance on the Enemies of human happiness and in vindicating the rights of the country. He burns with thirsting ardour and such is the spirit at this moment of every farmer throughout this wide extended country that it will be a matter of no small magnitude to know that avenging his country's rights avenging her wrongs he is ready and is led to the spot where glory won by a man of humane descent and determined bravery. Such is Lewis:--but eulogy be useless in a country where his name and family, during the four score years have been severally distinguished on the fields of principle, prowess, hospitality, patriotism, in the numerous and battles fought during that period against the enemy of this country, against the Indians and the French.
