On Thursday last a Vagrant that counterfeited himself a Son of the Chevalier de St. George, was apprehended and imprison'd in Selkirk Jail.
Extract of a Letter from Selkirk.
The Fellow who was apprehended here, having been examined by the Justices, under the Name of David Hay, proves now to be One David Gillis, Son to John Gillis in Pitleie-Mill in Fife Shire. He had served a Noble Earl in that Shire, whom he has tricked, as he has done several others, and for which he had been imprisoned. There were found on him many Letters in Cyphers, with two Bills of 60,000 l. each, upon two People of London; also several Letters writ by him, and subscribed Ch. Stuart, which he acknowledged; all which we have sent to Edinburgh for Advice. He had been in this Country twelve Years ago, under the Name of Melvil, a Limner. He and his Associates are closely confined.
Edinburgh, June 24. As we hear, the counterfeit young Chevalier de St. George had liberally bestowed his Favours in Promotions Civil, Military, and Ecclesiastical; a List will be soon publish'd; that the Publick may know the due Honour these Gentlemen are so worthy to receive.
The following is a List of the Field Officers, Captains, and Subalterns, in the Highland Regiment of Foot Guards to be raised, viz.
Earl of Loudoun, Colonel; John Campbell, Esq; Member of Parliament for Glasgow, &c. Lieutenant-Colonel.
