Indian Troubles.
Prairie Du Chien, Aug. 10.' 49.—
I wrote you a few days since about lynching an Indian, and the probable consequence.— The report now is that the Chippewas have killed two men at or near the Falls of the Chippewa River: that Rice's warehouse at Sauk Rapids on the Mississippi. has been burnt; and that two men were killed by the Winnebagoes near these Rapids. and that other depredations, such as burning and plundering are going on, variously, between the two rivers, occupying a space of 150 miles in a direct line. Calls for public meetings have been made in St. Paul and other places above, to form volunteer companies for the protection of the defenseless inhabitants.
It is not likely that the Winnebagoes take part with the Chippewas on account of the lynching; nor is it certain that it was Winnebagoes and not Chippewas that have done the mischief. at and near the Sauk Rapids The Winnebagoes have declared their intention to return to their old hunting grounds in Wisconsin for the coming winter and have been prevented by military force. This may have incensed them to burn and murder on the Mississippi. The troops lying idle at Jefferson Barracks, would do much more for the protection of the country, if they were at Ft. Snelling or even here in these empty barracks.—[Madison (Wis.) Express.
