finds old friend
JACKSON, MICH (Spectator)
An unusual first name proved to be the missing link that enabled a Michigan lifer to re-establish contact with relatives after a 31-year interval.
Levatore Kearney, while playing checkers on the yard, overheard someone say the name Elbrew. Kearney interrupted the speaker's conversation to ask, "The man you're talking about, is his name Elbrew Dowell?"
"Yes, he's my father."
Elbrew Dowell had also been a childhood chum of Kearney back in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Through the younger Dowell, whose mother still lives in Raleigh, Kearney was able to relocate a half sister, a niece and other relatives there, and recently received his first letter from one of them since 1927.
Because of the family contacts, the aging, ailing prisoner is being considered for a parole.
Levatore Kearney has been serving his sentence for 37 years. He has never had a disciplinary report.
