Full Text

Extract of a letter from Lieut. Comd. Jacob Jones, dated Ketch, (Etna River) Mississippi, November 5th, 1806.

"I have the pleasure to inform you of our arrival in the river yesterday, with the gun-boats No. 11 and 12, in company, and all in good condition. The Vesuvius separated from us on the night of the 17th October, a few leagues east of the island of Abaco.

"The Ketches sail very fast—The gun-boats far exceed our expectations.—They were nearly as dry as the ketches, although they were kept under a press of sail all the passage, which was unusually rough.

"I have left No. 11 and 12 at Fort St. Phillips, (about 10 leagues above the Balize) to wood and water, and then proceed to Lake Pontchartrain and cruise there, according to orders that I received from Capt. Shaw, at the Balize."
