A most Solemn Event
The Hon. General Court sitting at Exeter, having on Friday received an account of the very sudden death of that great and good man, whom the people delighted to honor, Lt. General GEORGE WASHINGTON, they immediately appointed a very respectable committee to make arrangements for paying a solemn tribute to the memory of the deceased friend and father of United Columbia, the particulars of which we could not obtain seasonably for this day's Gazette, but will give in full length next week.
On receiving the solemn news in this town, the bells were all set tolling, the shipping in the harbour hoisted their colours half mast, and the sad gloom which seemed to hang over the countenance of every citizen of this town, bespoke the loss of a near and dear friend. The selectmen immediately directed arrangements to be made for taking due notice of the solemn event on Monday, the weather proving unfavorable, it was postponed till yesterday, when it was most solemnly commemorated, the late hour which the scene closed prevented us giving the particulars 'till our next.
Yesterday the Hon. General Court finished their session at Exeter, and adjourned to meet at Concord, where the election will be on the first Wednesday in June next.
