Wanted For Forestry Purposes.
St. Paul, Sept. 14.-The state forestry board, according to Gen. C. C. Andrews, state forestry commissioner and executive agent of the board, will ask congress at its next session to cede to the state of Minnesota 100,000 acres of land on the northern boundary of St. Louis county, for a state forestry reserve.
Representative J. J. Opsahl of Bemidji, a lumberman who is also much interested in forestry work, called on Gen. Andrews and told of a cruise made through this particular strip of land. The strip extends along Lac La Croix and Crooked lake. It is singularly beautiful, and Mr. Opsahl says he believes in places equals the scenery of the famous Yellowstone.
The land is full of stone, unfit for agricultural purposes. It is mostly burned-over timber land, with occasional spots where second growth timber has a good start. When in time to come it is accessible by railroad, Mr. Opsahl believes it will become a popular summer resort.
The lakes are dotted with many beautiful islands. The land all belongs to the federal government, and General Andrews believes it ideal for a forestry reserve and fit for nothing else.
"Such a reserve would also be a haven for game and game preservation," said Gen. Andrews to the News-Tribune representative, "as by state law hunting is prohibited on all state forestry reserves. If congress grants our request, we would have included in the grant act a proviso that any portions of the 100,000 acre tract fit for agriculture should be exempt from the grant."
