Another Barbarous outrage on American Property,--The brig Surprise, Capt. Smith, which sailed from Alexandria, D. C. on the 22d January, for Charleston, S. C. with 78 slaves, belonging to a Mr. Simpson, was driven unto Bermuda, by stress of weather, on the 11th February: where, through the interference of a society composed of colored persons, a writ of Habeas Corpus was sued the Chief Justice; and, notwithstanding the protest of Captain Smith, the slaves were forcibly taken from his vessel, and carried before the Chief Justice, who ordered them to be set at liberty. Captain Smith was also thrown into prison, where he was kept several days, and his vessel libelled. One negro woman with four children chose to remain on board, and returned in the vessel, which arrived at Charleston a few days ago.
