Full Text

Is It Treason?—Senator John P. Hale, just before he left the Senate to accept an appointment to a foreign post, at the hands of President Lincoln, made a set speech, in which the following remarkable passage occurs:

"We believe that the proper preservation of State Sovereignty, State Rights, State Power, is as essential to the successful operation of the system of our Government, as the Union—and if one or the other is to be destroyed, it had better be the Union than the States."

If this sentiment had been uttered by a professed Democrat it would have been denounced by the Abolitionists as rank heresy, and the author would have stood a prominent chance for a residence in a bastile; but being uttered by a favored son of loyal New England, he is rewarded by a fat appointment.
