Monday night three strangers, alleged to be "short changers," were apprehended in Bamberg; two of them were lodged in jail, and the third escaped when he ostensibly went into a drug store to telephone some parties. Mr. Noble, who operates a drug store in Branchville, came to town Monday night, and reported to the Bamberg officers that three men had come into his store and one of them had swindled him out of $5.00 in making some change. As soon as he discovered the swindle, and the further fact that other parties in Branchville had met a like fate, he immediately followed them. He set out to watch for the men here, and soon had them spotted. Officer Browning made the arrest. Mr. Noble went into a store to telephone the Orangeburg county authorities to come over and get them, and one of the men asked to talk also. On arriving at the store, the man made a break, and succeeded in eluding the officers. The other two were held for the authorities and turned over to them. The men were traveling in a fairly good automobile, which the men in jail say belonged to the one who escaped. Officer Browning has the car in his possession, and invites the runaway to come to town and claim it. The car bears a Pennsylvania license tag.
