DESERVES HERO MEDAL.
Bravery of a Six-Year-Old Boy in New York City.
New York, N. Y., July 22-There ought to be a hero medal pinned on the manly breast of Alfred Longa, of the Bronx, who is beyond doubt the bravest kid in the metropolis.
"Manly breast" is all right, despite the fact that Alfred is only six years of age. In an emergency he showed that he had more pluck than any of the dozens of men who were in the vicinity when a mad dog, running amuck, attacked two young women.
The adults contented themselves with crying "Police!" Six-year-old Alfred said nothing, but hopped onto the vicious animal like a bee on a posy, and hung tight, while the beast bit and clawed at him. Both of Alfred's hands were terribly lacerated by the venomed fangs of the mad dog, but he disregarded his wounds, and, with his legs entwined about the animal's body and his arms around its neck, hung on until a policeman appeared and put a bullet through the head of the dog. When it was all over the little hero fainted, and the men who had witnessed the struggle cheered him.
