Full Text

Amsterdam, Aug. 11. The British Ambassador at the Hague takes great Pains to engage the Republick to furnish the Succours with which it is obliged (by several Treaties) to Supply Great Britain, and has in Charge to offer considerable Advantages to the States General in case their High Mightinesses will agree to act in Concert with that Nation against Spain; but as this last seems to be a violent Undertaking which they are afraid will draw them into a Rupture with France, and it's doubted whether that Ambassador will succeed in his Instances. The French Ambassador opposes these Endeavours with his utmost Power, and exhorts the States-General with great Earnestness to remain Neutral, if a Rupture should happen between England and Spain. And the Marquis de Fenelon is on his Part no less solicitous in dissuading their High Mightinesses from joining in Concert with Great Britain, and has actually declared, That the King his Master was obliged by his Treaties with the King of Spain, to send an Army to his Assistance, if he was attack'd by Land, and a Squadron of Men of War, if by Sea; and that he must therefore look upon all them as his Enemies, that were Enemies to his Catholick Majesty.
