Full Text
Mr. John Fenner, a highly respectable merchant of this city, died on Sunday morning from the effects of poison. Mrs. Fenner died on Monday from the same cause. Several other members of the family are, we understand, also lying dangerously ill. These calamities were occasioned by a cabbage containing poisonous matter which was eaten by the family. It is said that Mrs. Fenner was in the habit of putting a small quantity of pearlash in the water in which she boiled cabbage, to render the article better flavoured, and to improve its appearance. It is thought that in this instance, arsenic was used in mistake for pearlash.
