This illustrious example merits universal imitation: under the benign influence of this spirit we emerged from colonial insignificance, into existence as a nation. Under this spirit we must now seek refuge from ignominy and slavery. But it must and ought to be realized, that these measures and the prevalence of this spirit are not more honourable and praiseworthy, than they are necessary. Unless we would share the fate of Switzerland, whose steps we have till recently minutely followed, it is essential that every man be ready at all points, not only to repel violence by vigorous action, but to lay down his life in defence of the liberty of his country. For this event, the citizens of Philadelphia, old men and young men, are, one and all, prepared. With a loud voice they cry "parati sumus"-their conduct proves it-and the godlike energies which they show forth on all sides, must vibrate in the loudest tones of nature to every extremity of the Union, they must reound thro' the remotest realms of the universe and thunder terror and dismay into the hearts of the tyrannical and persecuting Directors; while Heaven itself in favoring smiles, Shall shower upon our heads,
"Success as glorious, as our cause is right."
"Success as glorious, as our cause is right."
