Cotton Fire, Charleston, S. C., Oct. 19.-A cotton fire, which broke out on the North Commercial wharf, Sunday evening, is still burning, but under complete control. Early this morning the fire was discovered in two or three forward compartments of the steamship Bedford, which had previously been hauled out into the stream. Five streams of water were poured into the compartments by tugs, and after several hours work the fire was extinguished. The fire in the steamship Barrowdale still rages in her hold, although she has been scuttled and has had three streams of water pouring into her hold all day. The machinery is thought to be totally destroyed and the iron plates of her hull have been seriously warped. The vessel is very badly damaged and her cargo of 1200 bales of cotton is in immediate danger of being totally destroyed. The Travancore is not much injured and is being pumped out. Surveyors were had to-day on all of the damaged steamers and it was determined to discharge their cargoes at once. Until this is done it will be impossible to form any correct estimate of the damage either to the steamers or to their cargoes. At this time the estimate of losses are placed at the following figures:-
Commercial wharves real estate $50,000; cotton on wharves and in sheds $120,000, Wooden wharf's wharf, real estate, $25,000; cotton on wooden wharf $50,000, office furniture and personal property, $10,000; damage to steamship Barrowdale, $50,000; damage to cargo of Barrowdale, $114,000, damage to steamship Travancore, $25,000; damage to cargo of steamship St. Ravello, $105,000; damage to steamship Bedford, $100,000; damage to cargo of steamship Bedford, $50,000; total $586,000. The damage to real estate, to cotton and steamships is fully covered by insurance
