Full Text

An Account has lately been published here of several Pieces of Antiquity, which have within these few Days been discovered by the Removal of the Ruins of several old Buildings belonging to the Pouzzoli, in the Kingdom of Naples.

In the first Place, the Workmen have found a Temple, dedicated to the Emperor Septimius Severus, the Pavement whereof, the Pillars, and other Decorations are of very valuable Marble, and some Part of it actually transparent.

In the next Place, they have discovered four Statues of most exquisite Workmanship; one representing a Janus, another Serapis, an Egyptian Divinity, and two others, a Man and a Woman; the latter is represented as in the most imminent Danger of losing her Life, and clasping her Arms about the Man's Neck, in Hopes to preserve herself from the impending Destruction; the principal Beauties of these last consist in their Attitudes, and the lively Expression of the Passions.
