A.M. Burroughs Seeks Democratic
Nomination As Judge In Chicago
CHICAGO-(ANP)- A. Morris Burroughs, 45, one of Chicago's foremost attorneys, will seek the Democratic nomination for judge of the municipal court in the primary elections of April 12, it was announced last week.

Mr. Burroughs, who has been self-supporting since the age of 10, was born in Chicago and has been practicing here since 1921, mainly in civil law. He represented both Jesse Binga and the Binga bank from 1925 to 1930 and was closing attorney for the Home Owners' Loan corporation in 1934-35, closing loans of $550,000 and saving 155 Negro homes from foreclosure.

As a civic leader he was responsible for construction of the new outdoor swimming pools in Washington park, opened last summer, admittedly one of the finest in the world, and led in the fight to thwart efforts of white realtors who tried to block construction of the South Park Gardens, federal housing projects. He is also chairman of the board of directors of the Colored Big Brothers of Chicago.

While president of the Cook County Bar association in 1928 and '29 he selected Attorney Tyler to investigate the assassination of Attorney Octavius Granady who was slain on election day as he ran in opposition to a white candidate in the "Bloody 20th ward."

This resulted in the appointment of Attorney William H. Haynes as assistant special states attorney at $100 daily, the first time a Negro

had charge of a grand jury. His leadership in both legal and civic affairs has caused his campaign to win wide support from other lawyers of both races who consider him exceptionally well qualified for the bench. He is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
Seeking the Republican candidacy for municipal judge is Attorney Albert B. George, former judge, and the only Negro ever elected to the bench in Chicago. Southside voters are working to see that both men are nominated in the primaries.
