Extract of a letter dated Annapolis, Feb. 19 1822.
A bill levying a direct tax of $30,000 on the state, passed the house of delegates this morning by a respectable majority—the federalists very generally voting for it. It will not amount to three cents on the one hundred dollars on the valuation as assessed by the United States, in levying the direct tax of 1814, by which scale the present levy is graduated. Baltimore city and county will pay one third of the whole amount; and in fact there is no species of tax, direct or indirect, that has been or can be devised, that she will not at all times pay at least in this proportion.—American.
