MUTUAL GRIEF AT BIER
LEADS COUPLE TO ALTAR
Ira L. Rawn Met Miss Herely at
Funeral of Her Uncle, President
of Monon Route.
NEW YORK, Nov. 9.-A love affair
which began in a great mutual grief
a few months ago, as a young man
and a young woman, scarcely known
to each other, stood beside the casket
of an older man they had both loved,
and who had come to a tragic end,
will result during Thanksgiving week
in the marriage of Ira Leete Rawn
and Kathleen Herely, of Chicago.
Mr. Rawn, a graduate of the Arm-
our Institute of Technology, was a
well-known football player. After
graduation he came to this city. He
is an assistant engineer, engaged in
the New York Central railroad ter-
mina l work.
Mr. Rawn was the favorite nephew
of Ira G. Rawn, late president of the
Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville
Railroad (the Monon route), who
was found dead in his bed, a bullet
through his heart, in his home at
Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, last
July. When Mr. Rawn heard of the
death of his uncle he was almost
heart-broken, and went West without
delay.
Among the closest friends of the
elder Mr. Rawn were Mr. and Mrs.
Millard B. Herely, of No. 2817 Pine
Grove-ave., Chicago. Mr. Herely is
a traction expert and is wealthy. As
a young man, Leete Rawn had met
Miss Herely, but had not paid much
attention to her.
So entirely had she passed out of
his mind that he did not recognize
the beautiful young woman who stood
weeping by his uncle's body. It was
not until after the funeral that he
found out who she was. He admits
now that it was a case of love at first
sight with him. Miss Herely has not
said anything about that yet, but is
going to marry Mr. Rawn, and her
friends say it did not take her long
to find out that she loved the young
engineer.
After Mr. Rawn's funeral,
his
nephew remained for a week in Chi-
cago. No announcement was made of
an engagement, and once, when Miss
Herely's girl friends, consumed by
curiosity, went to her father, he
made a formal denial that any en-
gagement existed
The Herely family now has an-
nounced the engagement, and yester-
day Mr. Rawn confirmed it.
"It'll take place in Thanksgiving
week," he said. "Just what day I am
not yet prepared to say."
