Full Text

The New-Hampshire Gazette has some remarks on the subject of the State Prison, and the management thereof under Stinson, from which we extract the following, premising, however that the estimated cost of the "New Wing" exceeded but a little more than seven thousand dollars, and this estimate included the labor at the customary price, and was actually done by the prisoners. This wing was built on the plan prepared, without an excess either in quantity, quality, or price of materials, and yet was represented to have cost about nineteen thousand!

"A part of the disasters and losses which have accrued, or become known, under Stinson's administration, may be perhaps fairly attributed to his mismanagement; but they have, there is no question, been greatly magnified by the opposition. They talk about expenditures and losses amounting to 50 or 60 thousand dollars, but it is seldom mentioned, that there has, out of this money, been built a wing or addition to the prison, which must have absorbed at least 20 or 30,000. Recently, a law suit has been decided, in relation to a debt due the prison, in which 6 or 7,000 dollars have been lost to the State other losses of considerable amount have accrued, as we understand, from failures of persons owing the prison Whether Stinson be answerable for all these, we cannot pretend to say, nor do we understand that there is any proof of his dishonesty. We wish not to palliate or aggravate his offences; we apprehend the greatest trouble may have arisen from his management in leaving the business at loose ends. Whatever it may be. if he prove a defaulter, let him or his bondsmen face up."
